Quick answer

Steel weight calculator covers rebar (TMT bars), MS plates, pipes, and square bars. Uses standard mild steel density (7,850 kg/m³) and the universal d²/162.28 formula for rebar weight per metre.

What is Steel Weight?

Steel is sold by weight, not by length or piece. So estimating any steel order — TMT bars for RCC, MS plates for fabrication, pipes for railings — comes down to converting dimensions to kilograms.

Rebar formula: weight per metre = d²/162.28, where d is the diameter in mm. So a 12mm bar weighs 12²/162.28 = 0.888 kg/m. The 162.28 constant comes from (π/4 × density × 10⁶), encapsulating all the geometry and mild steel density (7,850 kg/m³) into one number.

Plates are simpler: length × width × thickness × density. Pipes need the cross-sectional area of the steel ring (annulus). Square bars are side² × length × density. The calculator handles each type with the right formula.

Density × volume, by shape

Formula
Rebar (per metre): d² / 162.28 (kg/m, d in mm) Plate: L × W × t × 7850 Pipe: π × ((D/2)² − ((D−2t)/2)²) × L × 7850 Square bar: side² × L × 7850

How to use this calculator

Pick steel type, enter dimensions, get total weight.

  1. Pick steel type

Rebar (round TMT), MS plate (rectangular), MS pipe (hollow), or square bar.

  2. Enter dimensions

Diameter for rebar/pipe (mm). For plates: thickness, width, length. For pipes: outer dia + wall thickness.

  3. Enter length and quantity

Length in metres per piece, quantity = number of pieces.

When you need steel weights

Construction rebar order

Calculate total weight before ordering TMT bars for an RCC slab. 8-12mm for slabs, 16-25mm for columns.

Fabrication estimates

MS plates and angles for fabrication shops. Calculator gives weight to multiply by per-kg rate.

Pipe / railing projects

Compute weight of MS pipes for staircase railings, gates, fences.

Verify supplier weight

When the truck arrives, weigh-bridge weight should match calculator. Catch under-supply before paying.

Glossary

TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated)
Modern rebar — heat-treated for higher strength + ductility. Standard for Indian RCC.
MS (Mild Steel)
Common construction steel grade. Density 7,850 kg/m³.
Rebar
Steel reinforcement bars embedded in concrete. Round, ribbed for grip.
Plate
Flat rectangular steel sheet. Used in fabrication, machinery.
Annulus
Ring-shaped cross-section of a pipe. Outer area minus inner area.

Frequently asked questions

What is the d²/162.28 formula?
It's a shortcut for rebar weight per metre, where d is diameter in mm. The full derivation: (π/4) × (d/1000)² × 7850 = d² / 162.28 kg/m. So a 12mm bar is 12²/162.28 = 0.888 kg/m.
How accurate is the weight calculation?
Within ±2% for standard mild steel. Stainless steel (7,930 kg/m³), galvanised steel, and high-strength steels have slightly different densities — refer to manufacturer specs for precise weights.
