Quick answer

Area is two-dimensional space — measured in square units. The calculator switches between square millimetres up to square kilometres in metric, and from square inches up to square miles in imperial. Hectares and acres are commonly used for land.

What is Area Converter?

Area is what you measure for floor plans, plot sizes, fabric, paint coverage, agricultural land, and screen sizes (in square inches when the manufacturer wants to look generous).

In Indian real estate, plot area is usually quoted in square feet (sq ft) or square yards (sq yd). One square yard equals 9 sq ft. One acre = 4,840 sq yd = 43,560 sq ft. One hectare = 2.471 acres = 10,000 sq m. These conversions are essential when comparing properties across regions or buying agricultural land.

Floor space in apartments is in sq ft for the carpet area, built-up area, and super built-up area — three different numbers from the same property. The calculator handles unit conversions only; it does not change the categorisation of area.

1,200 sq ft = 111.5 sq m

How to use this calculator

Enter the value and pick units. Same straightforward flow as length conversion.

  1. Enter the area

Decimal numbers fine. For real estate, use the figure from the property document.

  2. Pick source and target units

Common Indian needs: sq ft to sq m for international comparisons; sq yd to sq ft for plot calculations; acre to hectare for agricultural land.

When you need area conversion

Property listings

Listings sometimes give carpet area in sq m and total area in sq ft. Convert both to one unit for fair comparison.

Tile and flooring

Tiles sold per box (count × per-tile area). Floor area in sq m or sq ft tells you how many boxes you need.

Agricultural land

1 acre = 4,047 m² = 0.4047 hectares. Government land records often use both interchangeably.

Paint coverage

Paint cans state coverage per litre in sq ft or sq m. Convert as needed before estimating quantity.

Common mistakes to avoid

Doubling the linear conversion factor for areas

1 m = 3.28 ft, but 1 m² = 10.76 sq ft — the factor gets SQUARED, not doubled. This is the single most common area-conversion error.

Mixing acres and hectares in farm calculations

1 hectare = 2.47 acres. Government agricultural schemes and land ceilings are in hectares; local talk is usually acres. Converting the wrong way misstates a holding by 2.5×.

Estimating plot area from one side only

A '30-foot plot' means nothing without the other side. A 30×40 site is 1,200 sq ft; 30×50 is 1,500. Multiply both dimensions, then convert.

Glossary

Square metre (m²)
SI unit for area. 1 m² = a square 1 metre on each side.
Hectare (ha)
10,000 m² = 1 hectare. Used for medium-sized land plots.
Acre
43,560 sq ft = 4,047 m² = 0.405 ha. Common for US/UK land.
Square yard (sq yd)
9 sq ft. Common Indian real estate unit, especially in north India.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?
1 square metre = 10.764 square feet. Indian apartment sizes quoted in sq ft divide by 10.764 to get sq m — a 1,000 sq ft flat is about 92.9 sq m.
How many square feet are in an acre?
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.86 sq m. An acre is also 100 cents (in South India) or about 0.4 hectares.
What is a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 square metres — a 100 m × 100 m plot — equal to 2.47 acres. Indian agricultural statistics and land ceiling laws are written in hectares.
What local land units does India use?
They vary by state: bigha (0.25–0.67 acres depending on region), guntha (1,089 sq ft, Maharashtra/Karnataka), cent (435.6 sq ft, South India), katha and ground elsewhere. Always confirm the local definition in property documents — bigha sizes differ even between districts.
How do I convert between carpet, built-up, and super built-up area?
Carpet area is usable floor space; built-up adds walls (~10–15% more); super built-up adds common areas (another 15–30%). Under RERA, developers must quote carpet area — a '1,200 sq ft super built-up' flat may have only ~800–900 sq ft carpet.
