Convert semester GPAs (SGPA) into the cumulative CGPA across your degree. The calculator computes a credit-weighted CGPA — the standard method used by all Indian engineering, science, and commerce universities.
What is SGPA→CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the GPA for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all semesters completed so far. Most Indian universities (Anna Uni, VTU, Mumbai Uni, Delhi Uni, IITs, NITs) use a 10-point CGPA system; some use 4-point.
The cumulative is weighted by credits earned in each semester. If you have 24 credits in one semester and 22 in another, the heavier semester contributes more to CGPA. This is why a strong semester near the end can lift CGPA more than the same effort early on.
How credit-weighted CGPA is calculated
CGPA = (Σ SGPA × credits per semester) ÷ Σ credits. Each semester's SGPA is multiplied by that semester's credit load, summed across all completed semesters, and divided by the total credits.
Some universities use a simplified equal-weighted approach (average of SGPAs) but the credit-weighted method is more accurate when credits vary across semesters. Calculator supports both modes.
- SGPAᵢ
- Semester GPA—GPA for semester i, on 10-point scale
- Creditsᵢ
- Semester credits—total credits taken in semester i
How to use this calculator
Enter SGPA for each completed semester
From your university mark-sheet/grade-card. Most universities show SGPA on a 10-point scale (e.g., 8.5 / 10).
Enter credits for each semester
Total credits taken in each semester. Typical B.Tech semester is 22-26 credits. If you don't have exact figures, 24 credits per semester is a reasonable approximation.
Read your cumulative CGPA
Calculator outputs credit-weighted CGPA on the 10-point scale (or 4-point if you toggle).
When to use it
Tracking academic progress mid-degree
Check CGPA after each semester to see if you're on track for honours (typically 7.0+ CGPA), first class (6.0+), or distinction (7.5+ depending on university).
Placement / higher studies eligibility
Many companies have a 7.0 CGPA cutoff for placements. GATE/CAT eligibility, MS abroad applications, and government job applications often require minimum CGPA.
Projecting final CGPA
Use the calculator to figure out what SGPA you need in remaining semesters to hit a target CGPA. For example, if you currently have 7.2 CGPA after 4 semesters (96 credits) and want 7.5 by graduation (200 credits), you need an average 7.8 SGPA in remaining 4 semesters.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting to include backlog/re-exam credits
Most universities count cleared backlog credits in CGPA, but at the original or revised grade depending on policy. Check your transcript for the actual credits applied.
Using simple average when university uses credit-weighted
Simple average (sum SGPAs / semester count) gives a different number from credit-weighted. Always use credit-weighted unless your university explicitly uses simple average.
