Estimate your CAT percentile from your raw score using historical CAT score-to-percentile distributions. CAT 2024 had ~3.3 lakh candidates; percentile determines IIM call eligibility.
What is CAT Percentile?
CAT (Common Admission Test) is the entrance exam for IIMs and 1000+ other B-schools. Conducted by IIMs (different host each year) for ~3.3 lakh candidates annually. Three sections — VARC (Verbal & Reading Comprehension), DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning), QA (Quantitative Aptitude). Total time 2 hours (40 mins per section).
CAT reports your score as a percentile — the percentage of candidates who scored below you. Top 0.01% gets 99.99 percentile. IIM-A/B/C typically require 99+ overall percentile and high sectionals. Lower-tier IIMs (Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow) call at 95-97 percentile. Non-IIM top B-schools (FMS, MDI, SP Jain) accept down to 90-95 percentile.
How CAT percentile is derived
CAT uses scaled scores (not raw), and percentile is computed against this scaled distribution. Scaling adjusts for slot-wise difficulty differences. The same raw score in an easy slot may give a lower percentile than in a hard slot.
Approximate raw-to-percentile bands (varying year-on-year):
80+ scaled ≈ 99.5+ percentile (IIM-A/B/C interview band)
70-80 scaled ≈ 98-99.5 (most IIMs)
60-70 scaled ≈ 95-98 (lower IIMs + top non-IIMs)
50-60 scaled ≈ 90-95 (top non-IIM B-schools)
40-50 scaled ≈ 80-90 (good non-IIM options)
How to use this calculator
Enter your CAT scaled score
From the IIM score card (not the percentile field — the actual scaled score, typically 0-200ish but most candidates score 0-120).
Enter total candidates appeared
Usually 3-3.5 lakh per year. CAT 2024 had ~3.3 lakh. NTA / IIM publish the number with results.
Read estimated percentile + B-school band
Calculator shows percentile estimate, AIR estimate, and the typical B-school band you'd qualify for.
When to use it
Post-CAT B-school shortlist planning
Different B-schools have different cutoffs. Calculator helps you decide where to apply post-results — IIM-A/B/C only if 99.5+, lower IIMs if 96+, top non-IIMs if 90+.
Sectional vs overall trade-off
CAT has sectional cutoffs (typically 85-90 percentile per section for IIM-A/B/C). Even a high overall is useless without clearing sectionals. Calculator gives overall; check IIM cutoffs for sectional requirements.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing raw score with scaled score
CAT reports both raw (your actual marks) and scaled (after slot normalisation). Percentile is computed from scaled, not raw. Use the scaled score in the calculator.
Ignoring sectional cutoffs
Strong overall doesn't help if you're below sectional cutoffs. Plan section-wise targets explicitly during prep.
