What this means

A scaled score of 60 falls in the 92%ile band against 3.30 lakh candidates, giving an approximate AIR of 26,400. Tier-2 B-schools become realistic.

* CAT percentile is computed by IIM using percentile normalisation, not raw score.

* Section-wise percentile cutoffs also apply — VARC, DILR, QA each have own minimums for IIMs.

* Final shortlist uses CAT percentile + academic profile + work-ex + diversity — not score alone.

Quick answer

Estimate your CAT percentile from your raw score using historical CAT score-to-percentile distributions. CAT 2024 had ~3.3 lakh candidates; percentile determines IIM call eligibility.

What is CAT Percentile?

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the entrance exam for IIMs and 1000+ other B-schools. Conducted by IIMs (different host each year) for ~3.3 lakh candidates annually. Three sections — VARC (Verbal & Reading Comprehension), DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning), QA (Quantitative Aptitude). Total time 2 hours (40 mins per section).

CAT reports your score as a percentile — the percentage of candidates who scored below you. Top 0.01% gets 99.99 percentile. IIM-A/B/C typically require 99+ overall percentile and high sectionals. Lower-tier IIMs (Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow) call at 95-97 percentile. Non-IIM top B-schools (FMS, MDI, SP Jain) accept down to 90-95 percentile.

How CAT percentile is derived

CAT uses scaled scores (not raw), and percentile is computed against this scaled distribution. Scaling adjusts for slot-wise difficulty differences. The same raw score in an easy slot may give a lower percentile than in a hard slot.

Approximate raw-to-percentile bands (varying year-on-year):

80+ scaled ≈ 99.5+ percentile (IIM-A/B/C interview band)

70-80 scaled ≈ 98-99.5 (most IIMs)

60-70 scaled ≈ 95-98 (lower IIMs + top non-IIMs)

50-60 scaled ≈ 90-95 (top non-IIM B-schools)

40-50 scaled ≈ 80-90 (good non-IIM options)

Formula
Percentile = 100 × (Candidates with lower score / Total candidates)
Worked example
Your scaled score72
Total candidates3,30,000
Typical 72 score → ~99.0-99.3 percentile band
Rank ≈ (100 − 99.15) × 3,30,000 / 100
≈ 2,800
Estimated percentile 99.0-99.3; rank ~2,800

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your CAT scaled score

From the IIM score card (not the percentile field — the actual scaled score, typically 0-200ish but most candidates score 0-120).

  2. Enter total candidates appeared

Usually 3-3.5 lakh per year. CAT 2024 had ~3.3 lakh. NTA / IIM publish the number with results.

  3. Read estimated percentile + B-school band

Calculator shows percentile estimate, AIR estimate, and the typical B-school band you'd qualify for.

When to use it

Post-CAT B-school shortlist planning

Different B-schools have different cutoffs. Calculator helps you decide where to apply post-results — IIM-A/B/C only if 99.5+, lower IIMs if 96+, top non-IIMs if 90+.

Sectional vs overall trade-off

CAT has sectional cutoffs (typically 85-90 percentile per section for IIM-A/B/C). Even a high overall is useless without clearing sectionals. Calculator gives overall; check IIM cutoffs for sectional requirements.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing raw score with scaled score

CAT reports both raw (your actual marks) and scaled (after slot normalisation). Percentile is computed from scaled, not raw. Use the scaled score in the calculator.

Ignoring sectional cutoffs

Strong overall doesn't help if you're below sectional cutoffs. Plan section-wise targets explicitly during prep.

Frequently asked questions

What CAT percentile do I need for IIM Ahmedabad?
Historically 99+ overall plus 80+ each in VARC, DILR, QA. Final shortlist also weighs class 10, 12, graduation percentages, work experience, gender diversity, and academic diversity. A 100 percentile doesn't guarantee a call without strong academics.
How accurate is the score-to-percentile mapping?
The calculator uses banded data from CAT 2022-2024. CAT papers vary in difficulty; the score-to-percentile mapping shifts each year. Expect accuracy of ±0.5-1 percentile from your real result.
Why do percentiles differ from scores?
CAT scaling normalises across the 2-slot exam to ensure fairness. A score of 60 in a harder slot may map to higher percentile than 60 in an easier slot. IIM publishes the final scaled score and percentile together.
Does sectional percentile matter?
Yes — most IIMs have sectional minimums (e.g., IIM-A wants 80+ percentile in each of VARC, DILR, QA for general). Hitting 99 overall but 70 in one section often fails sectional cutoffs.
